Learn to Write a Compound Sentence!

Mrs. Ranney's students are always trying to improve their writing skills.

*     *     *     *     *
 A compound sentence:
  1. Combines two shorter related sentences (This means it has two subjects and two predicates!)
  2. Joins the two sentences with  a conjunction (and, or, but, so)
*     *     *     *     *
Here are some sample compound sentences, and they are all about Thanksgiving!
(Hey, that's a compound sentence!)

***

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, and many families gather for a traditional feast.

In 1620, the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, but they had really
planned a trip to Virginia.

The Massachusetts winter was extremely cold and harsh, so everyone
had to work together to survive!

The Wampanoag Indians helped the struggling Pilgrims, so they were able to harvest crops for their first feast!

Modern Americans dine on turkey and stuffing at home, or they make a
reservation at a local restaurant.

  1. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

This month my grandma rented a beach house, so my family will go every weekend. The day before Thanksgiving my cousins from Las Vegas will come, so we will have our whole family there.

I am going to have an awesome Thanksgiving week this year!

  2. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

This year during Thanksgiving week I am with both my mom and my dad, so that means I get to eat two turkeys.

We are also going to my cousin's house in Orange County, and I will see all my relatives.

    Cheers,
    Tyler

  3. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

This month we are going to have Thanksgiving at our house, so I get to see my cousins. I have a lot of cousins!

We are having 25 family members over, and everyone gets to bring their favorite dish. Some of the dishes are yams, mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, stuffing, cranberry sauce, salad, and of course let's not forget Turkey with gravy! I love to eat. Eating is one of my hobbies.

What is everyone else doing for Thanksgiving?

    CHEERS,
    CHARLOTTE

    1. Dear Charlotte,

I am going to my friend Abbey's house, and we are going to have a lot of different things to eat. They have an enormous house, so they can have a lot of people over for Thanksgiving too. Abbey told me she has a party for almost every holiday! I will probably hog the turkey, and everything else! I get really hungry easily.

    2. Dear Jules,

I have been to Abbey's house just once. For your information I hog the turkey:). I also hog the mashed potatoes. They're so good.

    3. Dear Charlotte,

I have been to their house a lot of times. I just ask, and ask, and my mom finally lets me go over! For your information many people will hog the turkey. On holidays that involve animals I feel so bad. This year is my first time going to Abbey's house for Thanksgiving.

      Your hogging friend,
      Jules

    4. @ Charlotte and Jules,

We have a third and second split class. Abbey is in my class, but she is in third grade. :-( I have never been to her house. What did you eat at her house? It is most likely you ate turkey, but some people eat duck instead.

On Alphasmarting, I passed the whole thing, but now I think I will need to type "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" over and over for the rest of the year. :-( Do you think you would have to do the same thing?

      Warmly,
      Heather

  4. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

This year for Thanksgiving I am going to my uncle’s house. Most of my cousins and some of my parents’ friends will be there. My uncle is going to prepare the turkey, but everyone else can bring their favorite dish. One of my favorite Thanksgiving foods is pumpkin pie, so my grandma will bake it.

Every year we usually celebrate Thanksgiving in our house, but this year we will gather at my uncle’s house instead. This Thanksgiving is also different because my oldest cousin is in college, so he will not be here. It will probably be as exciting as the previous Thanksgivings were.

    Sincerely,
    Alexandra

  5. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

This year for Thanksgiving our family will be going to my Uncle and Aunt's house in Corona. My Grandma will also be joining us. She is bringing the pies. I will be helping my mom cook the turkey this year, but we are also going to make a Prime Rib Roast. It is my dad's favorite. I do not have any older cousins, but by next year I will have 2 more. Our family likes to play card games when we get together and my fsvorite is UNO.

    Happy Thanksgiving,
    Brooke

  7. Dear Mrs Ranney and class,

For Thanksgiving, I am going to fly on a plane to Texas. I spend the first two days with my Grandma because my cousins are in school. On Wednesday, we see our cousins, and we start to cook all the food for our Thanksgiving meal. On Thanksgiving day, I play games and I eat turkey, but I like ham and mashed potatoes the most. I will fly home after a total of seven days.

    Cheers,

    Alex

  10. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I am looking forward to next week because we are going up to Mammoth to ski, and we will be spending Thanksgiving with relatives. We had no clue whether there would be good natural snow at Mammoth, but the ski slopes will be great since it has been snowing recently. We are going to ski next week, and after we ski we will drive to the Bay Area to spend Thanksgiving with relatives. How great is that?

    Have a nice Thanksgiving Break!
