A Landmark Day: Learning with Laptops!

This week Mrs. Ranney's class is very fortunate!

The fifth graders are at Outdoor Education.
Now, why is that  lucky for Mrs. Ranney and her students?

They were able to use the fourth/fifth grade laptops!

Here's how we used them:

First, we each composed a blog comment in word.
That way we were able to use the spelling and grammar check tools!
After proofreading, we copied and pasted our comments into the comment box on a blog.

Some of us commented to our Quad Blogging Buddies in Mrs. Watson's Class.
Others commented on our Skyping with Mr. Avery or Family Blogging Month posts.

After blogging, we practiced this week's vocabulary by playing the "Poppa's New Pants" eword game.

Then it was on to IXL to work on new skills with decimals!

If we completed our work on IXL, we were able to choose other links to explore.
Some of us chose Grammar Ninja!

What did you think about this experience?

What did you enjoy most about using the laptops?

What useful sites or applications could we use if we can get them again?

  1. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I Loved using the 5th grade laptops! It was so much fun to go on to IXL, eword game, and lastly go on word to type a comment for our classroom blog.

Out of all of the awe-inspiring things that we did on the laptops, I enjoyed making a comment for our blog the most.

Next time we get the laptops, I hope that it is a special as it was both of the other times that we went on them!:)

    Warmly,
    Carly☀

  2. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I think it was astounding that we got to use the fifth graders’ laptops! I also think that it was generous of them to share their laptops with us while they’re at Outdoor Education. I promise that when I’m in fifth grade , I’ll share my laptop with one of your future students.

I have the same laptop at home, so I’m used to using it. I’m using it right now to comment!

My favorite part of using the laptops was when we got to go on your links page and play the eword game. The game helps me study for the test while having fun.

I saw that Google Earth was available on the laptops, so I would like to use that next time we have the laptops. I’d also like if we got to just surf the web. Then I would be able to check my email.

    Your student,
    Ella

    Dear Mrs. Ranney’s Class,

Wow…I am so impressed with how proficient you are getting on computers. Laptop computers had not yet been invented when I was in third grade!

I understand that you have started to learn some of the keyboard short cuts on Word. Let’s review some of them:

    Control S = Save
    Control X = Cut
    Control C = Copy
    Control V = Paste
Control A = All (to select all items on the page)
    Control Z = Undo

Now, here are some new ones to try out. They work when using Word, Powerpoint (which you will start to learn in 4th grade) and Excel.

    Control B = Bold
    Control U = Underline
    Control I = Italics
    Control P = Print
Control O = Open (to open an existing file)
Control N = New worksheet (to open a new, blank page)

Once you have mastered these new short cuts, I will send you some more.

    Happy computing!

    Sincerely,

    Suzanne (Leah’s Mom)

  4. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

It was so much fun using the fifth grade laptops!!

My favorite part was when we typed a blog comment on one of the post. I did my comment on Ms. Watson's blog.

I wish we could keep the laptops. They were that much fun!!

  5. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
I loved using laptops, but I most loved writing a comment.
I miss my brother, he is at “out door ed.”

    I have a question…

When you were a kid did you go to Chaparral?
If you did, which fifth teacher did you get?

    Regards,
    Ariel  :) (:

  6. Dear Mrs. Ranney's class,

I am so excited that you are using the fifth graders' laptops while they are away at Outdoor Ed. I am sure that they would be most impressed by your knowledge of computers! They won't be back until Friday, so the laptops are all yours for a couple more days. Yeah!

    Warmly,
    Nicole (Grace's Mom)

  7. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

Using the laptops is so fun. I hope we get to do it again. When my mom was in third grade, she did not have laptops. So our class is lucky that we get to use laptops in class. We are able to use laptops because the fifth grade is at Out Door Ed.

    Best Regards,
    Sydney

  9. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I am so excited for family blogging month!!

I am going to invite my grandma and grandpa. My grandparents, and my parents definitely would be delighted to post a comment on one of our class blogs. My sisters and my moms friend, Aunt Alana, I bet would also love to comment.

I hope lots of my relatives will comment on our class blog. I especially hope that everyone that I just mentioned will comment when they have time.

I will invite my relatives I just mentioned and possibly more to other blogs. Not just the family blogging month post. I bet my relatives will find that our other blogs will be very intriguing too.

    Yours Truly,
    Grace*☺*

I am so happy because we got permission to use the fifth grade laptops, and we enjoyed it. This privilege was exciting because we got to type comments on the blog, and we got to go on IXL after we typed our comments.

I was so excited that we got to use the laptops!

    best,

    Dear Mrs. Ranney's class,

I'm sad that this is the last week for quad blogging. Hopefully we can Skype with your class again it was very fun.

We are making kites in math and me and Natalie are partners ! We are drawing an earth on our kite with American Flags around it.

You are very lucky you got to use a lot of laptops. We only have two in our classroom. We use them for Quad Blogging and for study Island.

I hope you have a nice weekend. And have fun with your 5th grade laptop.

    From,
    Ariel D. ( in Mr. Avery's classroom blog) :) :) :) :) :)

  13. Dear Ariel,

I am also very ecstatic that my class is fortunate enough to us the fourth/fifth grade laptops! In fact, to type this comment, I’m using a laptop right now!

This is the last day to use the laptops because the fifth graders are coming back from Out Door Education today. Out Door Ed, which is what we call it for short, is a place where only the fifth graders go, and they get to do all sorts of new, interesting things and learn about the environment.

We are sharing the laptops with another class, Mrs. Yollis’ class, and sometimes we get to use the laptops before recess and sometimes we use them after recess. Today, nobody used the laptops in the morning and now we are using them until lunch. After lunch, we are giving them the laptops.

Hope to hear from you soon!

    Warmly,
    Jamie ☺

  14. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Suzanne,

    @ Mrs. Ranney,

I enjoyed using the laptops, when the fifth graders where at Outdoor Ed. I hope when I am in fifth grade I will be able to use laptops too. I thought this experience was awesome! The best thing about the laptops was when we typed comments to our blog.

    @ Suzanne,

I already knew: Control C, for Copying, and Control V for Pasting, but I did not know: Control S for Saving, Control X for Cutting, Control A for To selecting every thing on the page you are on, Control Z for Undoing, Control B for Bolding, Control U for Underlining, Control I for Italics, Control P for Printing, Control O for Opening an existing file, Control N for to Open a new, blank page.

    Yours truly,
    Philip

  15. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I really enjoyed using the laptops!

One of my favorite parts was making comments on the blog. The one post that I commented on twice was the family blogging month post. I wrote back to my relatives on the east coast in Massachusetts.

Another one of my favorite things about using the laptops is that we went on Google Earth, I found Chaparral Elementary School, and even found our classroom!

One more thing that I enjoyed about using the laptops was that we could go on your links page and play the games on there.

Well, I really did like using the laptops!

    Sincerely,
    Jordyn

I think using laptops is so exciting! When I look at the people around me, I see that everyone is having so much fun typing a fabulous comment. I love laptops, because
they are portable. I miss my older sister, because she is at Outdoor Ed. I hope to learn more about our laptops.

  18. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I LOVED using the fifth grade laptops when they were at Outdoor Education. It’s so sad that we will not be able to use the laptops as much as we did this past week. Some of the sites that I enjoyed going on were: our classroom blog to make a comment, IXL, and lastly look for places on Google Earth.

I am so glad that the fifth grade let us use their laptops when they were out at Outdoor Education. One thing that I am looking forward to is, getting to maybe use the laptops when the fifth grade is back a school.

It was so fun to use the fifth grade laptops, and I just hope that we will be able to use them again!!

    Warmly,
    Carly★

  19. Laptops are great. You can bring them anyplace you like where there is a wi fi connection. You can be connected all the time to news, sports and your friends and family through emails. I am bringing mine to Africa and hope to post about the places I viist.

  20. Dear Class,

I think that you are all so lucky that your school has laptops for you to use. I know that you will have a chance to use them again next year when you're in fourth grade.

Did you know that most college students today use laptops for all of their classwork?

There are so many fun things you can learn and I'm so glad to hear that everyone had such a great experience with the laptops!!

    Sincerely,

    Ellen (Jamie's mom)

  21. Dear Mrs Ranney,

Thank you for inviting family members to also comment on the class blog. What a great learning experience--not just for the class but for me too.

When I was in the fourth grade we did everything by hand. We did not even use typewriters until we were in the 9th grade. Computers, blogs, laptops and today's Internet techonology were not even in our imagination. We didn't yet have a TV and our big entertainment was to listen as a family to Sunday night mystery theatre on the big radio in the living room. And, really, that was not that long ago.

We live in Sacramento and thank goodness we have wonderful weather today. Our cabin in the Sierra, however, has about 25 feet of snow all around and we should have lots of water for all of you in Southern California.

I am really looking forward to having Justin visit next week---he is going skiing at the cabin starting on Tuesday and is with us in Sacramento on Satuday and Sunday. Hooray---he can teach me how to fully use this blog. I too am learning everyday about new technology--and Justin is a great teacher.

Enjoy the day--and thank you for Family Blog Month.

    Warmest Regards,

    Ken Hall, Justin's Grandfather

    Sincerly,

  23. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

Mikayla came home so excited about her privileged time with these laptops. She said that she had the most fantastic day! I am always amazed of how technology savvy this generation is. I am definitely a proponent for anything that makes them so excited to learn something new.

  24. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

When we had the 4th and 5th grade laptops for an entire wondrous week, I was having so much fun going on learning websites. It was fun getting to have my own laptop at school for a wild week!

Whenever I go onto my laptop at my house, I always feel like making a comment on my creative classroom blog! Because I had to share my laptop with Raelynn, it was fun to go on IXL with a partner.

    Yours Truly,
    Carly
