Fabulous Fall, 2012!

Did you know that this year, September 22, is the first day of autumn?

In Southern California, we do not experience autumn, or fall,
the same way some places do.

However, we do feel a change in our weather, and even
the leaves of our trees sometimes change c
olor!

Have you ever wondered why leaves change color in the fall?
If you'd like to find out the answer

  1. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

My favorite Fall activity is soccer. What I like most about fall is playing in the leaves at my friend's house, and spending time with my family. I like going to the beach. I like going to the beach because I like seeing dolphins.

That's what I like and do in the fall.

    Best wishes,

It is so nice to see you here on the blog! You sound like a very active fellow! Good for you!

I agree about tennis, although I haven't played in a long time. Reading your comment makes me want to dust off my racquet and hit the courts!

      Keep on visiting the blog!

  6. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I clicked on the link and read all about Johnny Appleseed. His actual name isn't Johnny Appleseed. His real name is John Chapman.

It reminded me of last summer when I went to the Catskill Mountains in New York with my Dad. We went on a lot of hikes in the mountains and went fishing in beautiful lakes. There were some evergreen trees and some deciduous. My Dad grew up there, so he showed me secret places that most people would never know of. For example, there was this one pretty much secret hiking trail that led to a really large pond where we went fishing for native brook trout. Along the trail, we saw a few wild apple trees. My dad told me the story of Johnny Appleseed, and said that people think he came to the Catskills and planted his trees here.

The Catskills are also full of Maple trees. They turn beautiful colors in the Fall. We brought home maple syrup made from the trees around my grandma's house. Delicious! Which sounds like deciduous. Try saying delicious deciduous syrup three times fast. That's a tongue twister!

    Best wishes,

    Aidan

    1. Dear Aidan,

I am so impressed with your fascinating facts about fall! John Chapman, alias Johnny Appleseed, has interested me for a long time. How wonderful that you visited the Catskills where he may have planted trees!

Maple trees are some of my personal favorites because of their beautiful fall foliage and most certainly because of delicious maple syrup!

Your delicious deciduous syrup tongue twister is delightful!

      Keep up the great blogging!
      Cheers!

  7. Dear Mrs. Ranney, and class,

My favorite season is fall. Mrs. Ranney was right about southern California not having the same true fall experience as for example, the East coast or other places. However, around mid fall we do get some beautiful crisp weather. I love to be able to put on a scarf, and knit hat. I remember drinking my Starbucks coffee when my kids were very small, while I watched them play at the park. I especially love when the leaves change to their stunning yellow, orange, and brown colors.

The only thing I do not think is so fabulous about the fall is the fact that it gets dark really early, and is also dark in the mornings. It makes it a lot harder for me to wake up in the mornings ( I am not a morning person).

    Cheers,
    Andrea (Charlotte"s mom)

  8. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,
Last Saturday was the first day of Fall. The days are getting shorter while the nights are getting cooler. The leaves on the mountains behind my house are already starting to change color. I am waiting for the leaves to fall from the trees.

My twin brother Claude wants to post a blog comment.
    Cheers,
    Noel

  10. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

Until three years, we lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. Seasons were much more noticeable there. In the fall, the leaves would change color and fall off the trees. By the time winter arrived, the trees would be bare of leaves. My kids love to make leaf piles, or a "leaf house" as Jordan likes to call it, and jump in them. In CA, since there aren't quite as many leaves to collect, my kids save the leaves in bags in the garage, which I think is pretty funny.

I wonder if any of the other kids enjoy that as well.

  11. Dear Mrs.Ranney,

I found a lot of great facts on Awesome Autumn. Did you now that a broad, the flat part of a leaf is called a blade. The blade is connected to the stem. The stem is also called a petiole. The stem helps the blade get turned to the sun.

There's also a leaf called a Compound leaf. In a lot of plants the blades are divided into a number of small leaves called leaflets. Buds always are seen at the base of the leaf, never at the base of the leaflets.

    Cheers,
    Jules

What great research you did! You shared great information about compound leaves! Can you tell us what the leaves are called that are not compound?

I hope that everyone starts looking for fallen leaves to bring in to share! We can categorize into the two groups!

  13. Dear Mrs.Ranney,

I love fall! I love all the beautiful colors of fall. I really don't like evergreen trees, except for Christmas trees! I don't like them because they don't have leaves that turn colors. They have pine needles.

What is your favorite fall color?

    Cheers,
    Jules
