Remarkable Round Numbers!

This week, Mrs. Ranney's class has been working very hard at learning to round numbers!

Here are some basic rules to help you remember what to do:

How to Round Numbers

  • Decide which two round numbers the number you are working with is between
  • Choose the lower number if the digit next door to the place you are rounding is less than 5
  • If the digit next door is 5 or more, round up!

Example: Round 74 to the nearest 10

  • 74 is between 70 and 80
  • The digit next door to the tens place is 4, so round down to 70
Answer: 70
(74 gets "rounded down")

Example: Round 86 to the nearest 10

  • 86 is between 80 and 90
  • The digit next door to the tens place is 6, so round up to 90
Answer: 90
(86 gets "rounded up")

  4. @Maya, I'm glad to hear that you've been reviewing rounding with the quiz! You asked a great question. Let's see who answers you!

@Grace, I'm glad to hear that you've enjoying learning about rounding! It can be tricky, but I know you're up to the challenge. You asked a question with a large 5 digit number! What place would you like the class to round it to?

Keep up the good work, girls!
    All the best,

  6. Dear Grace,

I'm not precisely sure what value you want me to round to.Here are some posibilities:

-If you want me to round to the nearest hundreds it would be 34,600,to the nearest thousand it would be 40,000,to the nearest tens it would be 39,560.

See you in 11 hours and 45 minutes,
    Quynh Anh

  7. @Quynh Anh, what a clever response to Grace's question! You gave her all the possible answers! Good for you.

@Josh, you certainly came up with some challenging questions! I hope someone has a chance to answer before they have to go to bed!

Keep up the good work, you two!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Ranney

  8. Dear Class,

I loved the rounding and it's a great and fun way to practice. To answer one of Josh's questions, 4,712 is between 4,000 and 5,000. If we were to round it to the nearest thousand it would be 5,000.

See you in a little while,
    Eve

  11. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

How are you doing? I am doing great, and guess what! Jamie is in my class this year. Justin sits next to me in class. In math class I am #6, and we are rounding to the nearest million. I know a lot of kids in your class this year, and some of them know me too. I also am not talking in class. Mrs. Krauss is my teacher, Mrs. Kaplan is my math teacher, and Mrs. Sank is my science teacher.

    Best Wishes,

    Raelynn :)
