Our Blooming Butterfly Bush!

Today was a very special day for our class!

Inspired by Mrs. Ranney's Post called

Astonishing Arbor Day - Then and Now!,

one of our wonderful parents, Mrs. Mayer, had a brilliant idea!

Since Mrs. Ranney's class had planted a tree on our campus 28 years ago, and since this is Mrs. Ranney's final year of teaching, why not plant something special again?!

So, we did just that, with help from a few friends!

Mr. Lattimer dug the hole and mixed in the soil amendment.

Mrs. Grupp, a parent with a great deal of plant expertise taught us about how to plant it properly, so the roots could spread out in their new home.

Each of us helped loosen the roots.

Mrs. Ranney helped fill in the soil!

Mrs. Mayer brought our original artwork which has been reproduced as a tile to commemorate this special event.

After our butterfly bush was securely in place, we all took turns giving it a drink! (A special thank you to Andrea Testa who took many of the photos. Thanks to Mrs. Berman who also took photos today!

Here it is in its new home, awaiting the installation of the special plaque, so others who pass by will know who planted it and when!

Our special plant is called

Buddleja davidii 'Royal Red'.

Informally it is known as the Butterfly Bush! We look forward to seeing how tall it will grow and how many different butterflies
and hummingbirds it will attract!

  1. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
I loved planting that beautiful butterfly bush. I cannot wait to see all the butterflies and humming birds. Before school started today Annsley and I saw a humming bird. Did you know that a humming bird can flap its wings up to 1,000 times a minute? I hope everyone else enjoyed our planting project as much as me, and I would love to hear some facts that everyone else puts on the blog.
    Cheers,
    Maya

  2. Dear Class,

I have had a lot of experiences with putting plants into the soil. I planted all of the flowers in my front yard. My favorite flowers are called Poppies. I love butterflies, so I hope it makes a lot of them come visit. In fact I saw a white butterfly fly near the bush. It is very exciting to have more animals come to our school. Have you ever planted a bush.
    Sincerely,
    Annsley 🐦

  3. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

What a wonderful tribute to a person who has done so much for the education of children. With so many involved in the planting of the tree, it will grow as a reminder of how much can be achieved when we work together and remember those who have given so much.

Well done everyone. May the tree grow strong and bring many butterflies to a tree planted with love.

  4. Dear Class,

I had a lot of fun planting the marvelous butterfly bush. I enjoyed mixing the different type of dirt because I knew it would help the plant grow. I have planted many flowers but I've never seen one as beautiful as the butterfly bush. I hope that the butterfly bush grows as tall as it can. How tall do you think it will grow?

    Best wishes,
    Olivia

    1. My comment: Dear Olivia,

I also enjoyed planting the beautiful butterfly bush. My favorite part was watering it.

I have never planted any flowers, but my grandma in Korea has planted many plants in her apartment. My neighbor has planted lots of colorful flowers around her house.

I can't wait to see how much the butterfly bush has grown during the summer! I think it will grow taller than Mrs. Ranney!

      Enjoy your summer!

      Your friend,
      Michelle
