Origami Geometry!

As a culmination to our geometry unit, we created
two origami projects!

(Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding.)

One item we crafted was a clever paper drinking cup!

First, we cut out a square.

Next, we had to fold the square into an isosceles right triangle!

Third, we had to fold to create more triangles.

This had to be done on the other side too!

Can you see the three triangles? One of them is scalene!

Once the flaps were tucked in....

We were able to use our cups!

When we were finished with our paper cup activity,
we started creating paper airplanes!
The airplane began with a basic rectangle.

After cutting and coloring, we folded two congruent triangles.

After several more complicated folds...

We had our...

fearless flyers!

Please enjoy the slide show of our first flight!

What did you enjoy about these experiences?

What did you learn?

Have you tried these or other origami
projects at home?

  1. Dear Class,

It looks like this project was fun. I was not in school when on the day you did the origami lesson, but I have a book on it at home. I used to make all different kinds of origami animals at home, but this was before I had learned about geometry. I also love making paper airplanes that fly long distances.

    Sincerely,

    Aidan F.

    1. Dear Aidan F,

Even though you weren't here on the Origami day, we had a lot of fun. First, we made Origami cups. Then, we went to lunch. After lunch, we made paper airplanes (Mrs. Ranney's way). Then, we flew them for a ride. We also named them, and I named mine U.S.Plane. It was the best day ever!

    2. Dear Alex,

I named my airplane The Stone.

I thought it was so fun building things out of paper. Did you think it was fun?

I know that Aidan didn't get to folder papers with us in class, but he at least got to do it at home.

      Sincerely,
      Rain

  2. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

Origami has a long history in Japanese culture I think dating back around 500 years according to Wikipedia. The art of creating form by the folding of a piece of paper can be fascinating whether the design is simple or difficult.

You have chosen two of my favourite designs.

Paper planes of different design are fun to make and use. Some are made for speed, others for trick flying and some for gently floating through the air.

The paper cup has been useful more than once when someone needed a drink. I have made them when people needed to share a bottle of drink but don't have cups. Onlookers are sometimes surprised a piece of folded paper can hold water.

Did anyone try to invent their own design?
