Poppa's New Pants!

This week Mrs. Ranney's class is reading Poppa's New Pants by Angela Shelf Medearis.
This humorous story has many similes and tons of hyperbole. (hi • per • bo •lee)
Hyperbole is when a writer exaggerates to make a point.

The story is part of the Smart Solutions Unit. In the story, Poppa buys a brand new pair of pants. Unfortunately, they are too long and need to be hemmed. He asks his relatives who are staying at the house to mend them, but they are all too tired for the task.

The problem gets solved in a way that will leave you laughing like a hyena!

Listen to the story here!

We cut  a pair of pants out of paper to recreate the story.
The pants were as long as a table cloth!

In the story, some strange things happened during the night. George, Pappa's grandson, is sleeping in the kitchen because the relatives are using his bed. Throughout the night, George hears strange noises and sees ghostly shapes in the dark kitchen. He balls up like an armadillo he is so frightened!
By morning, it is revealed that Poppa's new pants got shortened!

Below, we recreated the story!

A "ghost" came and measured six inches, drew a line...

 and snip, snip, snip!

Then the pants were perfectly hemmed!

A second "ghost" took the pants, measured off six inches...

 and Snip! Snip! Snip!

Then added a hem!

The final helpful "ghost" took the pants, measured off six inches,

 Snip! Snip! Snip!

And, again, added a hem!

In the end, the pants were too short for Poppa!

However, they were just right for George!

*************

Can you explain what happened?

Who were those "ghosts" during the night?

What was your favorite simile or hyperbole from the story?

  2. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I liked when Grandma Tiny and Aunt Viney grabbed George like he was a rag doll. The three "ghosts" were Big Mama Grandma Tiny and Aunt Viney, oh and did I say Grandma Tiny and Aunt Viney grabbed George like he was a rag doll? I'm sorry,Aunt Viney and Big Mama grabbed him like he was a rag doll.

    Regards,
    Ariel:)

  3. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

The story is about George and his grandpa’s new pants. The new pants were too long for George’s grandpa, otherwise known as Poppa. Grandma Tiny, Aunt Viney, and Big Mama got up in the middle of the night to mend and hem Poppa’s new pants. They did it because they wanted to surprise Poppa. However, they did not know each other did it, so the pants were mended and hemmed three times and were too short for Poppa.

George didn’t wear his glasses at night, so he mistook Grandma Tiny, Aunt Viney, and Big Mama as ghosts.

My favorite simile was when the author compared George to an armadillo when he was curled up into a ball out of fear. My favorite hyperbole was when the author wrote, “hug and kiss the life out of me”, when he really meant just hug and kiss a lot.

I think it was mighty fun making those pants y’all!

    Your student,
    Ella

  4. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

Poppa bought pants that were too long. He asked everyone, except George, to hem them. But they all declined. Then during the night, Grandma Tiny, Aunt Viney, and Big Mama all hemmed the pants. In the end, the pants were too short for Poppa, but perfect for George.

The three "ghosts" were Grandma Tiny, Aunt Viney, and Big Mama .

My favorite simile was: my teeth were rattling so hard they were about to fall out.

    Cheers,
    Aidan

  5. Dear Mrs. Ranney's class,
It looked like you had a fun time reading Poppy's pants. The pants looked really big. What is the book about? Was it really descriptive? What is your favorite book to read in class.

    Sincerely,
    Natalie S.

  6. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

I think that the story “Poppa’s New Pants” is very humorous because George thought that Grandma Tiny, Aunt Viney, and Big Mama were the three “ghosts”. The funny part was when George checked to make sure all of his limbs were in place. That made all of us laugh!

The answer to your first question is: Grandma Tiny, Aunt Viney, and Big Mama each cut of six inches of Poppa’s new pants, mended the new pants, and hemmed about two inches of the new striped pants. In the morning, Grandma Tiny said that she had a surprise for Poppa, and she showed him the pants. He was so happy that she mended his pants, but he held them up to his waist and the pants only went down to his knees! Then Aunt Viney and Big Mama confessed that they also cut, mended, and hemmed the pants.

It turned out that Poppa’s new pants fit George perfectly, so instead of Poppa wearing them to church on Sunday, George wore them to Sunday church.

My favorite hyperbole or exaggeration from the story “Poppa’s New Pants” is when George said that he felt like he was about to drowned in a sea of wet kisses.

Certainly, I thought that the story “Poppa’s New Pants” is really humorous.

    Warm Regards,
    Carly☺

  7. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I thought the story, Poppa’s New Pants, was outstanding.

My favorite part of the story was when Grandma Tiny calls Poppa in the kitchen and says she has a surprise. Then when she tells Poppa how she got up last night, cut of six inches of Poppas pants and hemmed them the two other woman say “Oh no!” because they all got up last night, cut of six inches, and hemmed them up too.

I really liked Poppa’s New Pants. I thought some exaggerations were funny.

    Warmly,
    Grace*☺*

  8. Dear Mrs.Ranney,

The story ''Poppa's New Pants'' was a very comical. One of my favorite similes was when the author wrote that Big Mama was working so hard and she was like a Texas Tornado.

    Warmly,
    Jack

  9. @Natalie S.

Thank you for taking the time to comment about "Poppa's New Pants."

To respond to your questions, first, the story is about Poppa, George, and Grandma Tiny. Grandma Tiny's mom, Big Mama, and her sister, Aunt Viney come to visit Poppa, George, and Grandma Tiny. Poppa gets new pants that are too long for him, so he asks all of the women to repair the pants, but they all turn him down because they are all too tired. Secretly, in the middle of the night, each woman gets up, cut off six inches, and hems them, so they're too short for Poppa. Even though the pants are too short for Poppa, they're just right for George.

I hope to hear from you soon!

    Warmly,
    Jamie:)
