What Do You Get When You Fold a Square into Triangles?

In geometry, we've been learning all about triangles.

There are three types of triangles.

equilateral
(3 equal sides / 3 equal angles)

isosceles
(2 equal sides / 2 equal angles)

scalene
(NO equal sides / NO equal angles)

Watch what happened when we took a square piece of paper and folded it into various triangles!

A Practical Paper Cup! on PhotoPeach

Did you enjoy making the paper cup?

What have you learned about triangles?

What triangles have you found at home?

If you send in a digital image of a triangle you have found,
we will make a slide show of your triangles!
Be sure to tell what kind it is!

  1. @ Mrs. Ranney and class,

I loved the video! I enjoyed making the paper cup. I have learned that there are different and astonishing names for triangles. I have found two isosceles right triangles on the pool gate.

Do you know any other names for triangles?

Have a great time watching the movie!

    Cheers,
    Aidan

  3. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
I definitely will try making the paper cup at my house. I enjoyed making the paper cups at school very much and I LOVED THE VIDEO TOO! I learned that you can fold a square into an isosceles triangle. It is fun learning about all the different kinds of triangles and I thought it was also fun making the paper cups that you can actually drink out of.

    Yours Truly,
    Grace:)*

  4. Dear Mrs.Ranney,

I loved the video! I really liked making the paper cup. It was so much fun! I liked when you let us pour water into our cup and drink it. I enjoyed learning about different kinds of triangles like equilateral, isosceles,or scalene.

    Sincerely,

  6. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

This is Jonathan, Ella's older brother. At Calabasas High School, I am taking Geometry Honors, and I am also learning about triangles. We do very complex problems, and the concepts you are learning about triangles lay a very important foundation for my class. Learning about triangles is helpful not only for school, but also in life in general. Geometry is everywhere! Did you know that if you want to be an architect that designs buildings or a builder who builds them, you need to know precise angles?

I am impressed with the advanced skills you are learning. Keep up the good work!

    Sincerely,

    Jonathan (Ella’s brother)

  9. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
That is so cool that you made paper cups in class. I like the fancy paper. On that day was anybody absent? If anyone was, they would miss a lot of fun, but they could watch it on the blog. How many students are in your class. We only have 15 students in our class. We have 8 girls and 7 boys. I wish I got to make paper cups. I'll do it at home and let you know how it turns out.
    Sincerely,

  10. Dear Ella,
You are so lucky that you get to make paper cuts. After we saw a picture of you drinking from the cup you made. Does the water at your school taste good? The water at our school tastes bad so we all bring water bottles. It looks like you had a lot of fun! I was wondering, what are you working on now in class? We are working on fractions in our school. For example, 8/15 of our class are girls. 7/15 of our class are boys. I can't wait to see what your class writes to us next week! :)
