Our Visit to the Chumash Museum on PhotoPeach
Enjoy the photos from our Chumash Interpretive Center field trip.
The captions for each slide were composed by the students!
They learned so much!

Listen to the Chumash song we learned.
Panther thought we were perfect!

What was the most interesting fact you learned about the Chumash at the museum?

If you were a Chumash Indian, what do you think would be the most challenging
activity and why?

  1. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
The most interesting fact I learned at the Chumash Indian Museum was that when it rained, their aps didn't get wet inside but got bigger.
If I were a Chumash Indian, my most challenging activity would be hunting with the bow and arrow, because you have have to have skills and perfect aim.

  2. Dear Roxana,
I see you have checked out our new post. You certainly are an enthusiastic blogger! You are definitely correct that the aps didn't get wet inside during the rain. The ap itself did not get larger, but the tule swelled to a larger size as it absorbed the moisture.
I definitely agree that hunting with a bow and arrow would be challenging. I have used a bow and arrow before, and it took quite a bit of practice to be accurate and hit the target!
    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Ranney

  3. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

The most interesting fact I learned at the Chumash Indian museum was that they built aps out of things found in their surroundings. I need to agree that hunting with a bow and arrow would be a big, challenging thing to do.

  4. Dear Mrs. Ranney's class,

I was lucky enough to go to the Chumash museum with Mrs. Wilson's class. I learned a lot about how the Indian's lived. It is very interesting to me how they learned to use items found in nature to build things and to eat. They didn't waste anything. That is very different from how we live today.

If I were a Chumash Indian I think finding food to eat would be a huge challenge. It would be challenging because I don't know how to fish or to hunt.

I think you did a great job making the captions for the pictures. I enjoyed looking at the slide show.

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Pollack

  5. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

The most interesting fact I learned is they used canoes to go to the Channel Islands to trade. The hardest thing is the rabbit game because you have to have amazing aim.

  6. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I love the post of the Chumash museum. If I were a Chumash Indian, my favorite thing would be the rabbit game. The hardest thing would be paddling the canoe. The most interesting thing would be that the Chumash built everything.

    Sincerely,
    Andy

  7. Dear Mrs.Ranney,

The most interesting thing to me at the Chumash Museum was their tomol. The model tomol looked so real. The hardest thing would be the hunting for my tribe's food. I think the Chumash Museum is fantastic!

  8. Dear Mrs.Ranney,

I loved the Chumash museum. The most interesting fact I learned was that as many as six different families could live in the ap at once. One of the reasons I think this fact is memorable is because they could share the work and responsibilities for taking care of the children. If I was a Chumash Indian, the hardest thing to do would be to get food and to kill the animals.

  9. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

The most interesting fact that I learned about the Chumash Indians was that they did not waste things. For example, they would kill a deer and use all of its parts for different things. Food, clothing, and the bones would be used to make tools.

If I was a Chumash Indian I think the most challenging activity would be to catch food. It is difficult to catch food because you have to be very quiet and quick. I would practice catching food by playing the rabbit game. I think it is difficult to play the rabbit game because you have to have good aim.

  10. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

Another interesting fact that I learned was that the Chumash Indians had a sweat house for only men. The hardest thing about being a Chumash Indian is to build an ap with your bare hands.

    Cameron

  11. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

The most interesting fact I learned is that a Chumash family would leave the ap and go move to a place during the winter like when birds migrate. The hardest thing to do if I was a Chumash Indian would be making an ap because of all the wood and the tule you would have to stick to it.

    Sam
