Exploring North America!

Today our class took our first trip to National Geographic's

We enjoyed traveling and exploring on our own.
Then we checked out the coastal regions,

 the inland or landlocked areas,

and even took a dip in the Atlantic!

Afterward, we climbed the major mountain ranges in the U. S. A.
Can you name them and tell where they're located?
Do you know which peaks the standing students represent?

  1. Dear Class,
Of all the mountains ranges the Rocky Mountains are the biggest.
I went to the Rockies to learn how to snowboard. It was very exciting.
I was in Utah but the Rockies go from Alaska all the way to New Mexico , that is over 3,000 miles. The Rocky Mountains are my favorite range.

    Sincerely,
    Annsley

  2. Dear Class,
This summer I visited Michigan and Wisconsin. On vacation I went to Lake Michigan and I got to walk in it. The water was really cold! Did you know that Lake Michigan is the third biggest of the 5 Great Lakes? It is the only Great Lake that is fully in the United States of America. The other ones go in to Canada. I had a good time visiting this Great Lake and enjoyed seeing it on the big map at school.

    Cheers,

    Kim

  3. Dear class,
Do you know what the third largest continent is? North America.
The animals are different in North America than Central America.
Do you know who came to North America first?

    Cheers,

  4. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

I was watching the president's State of the Union speech in Washington D.C., so I decided to go to World Book online and find out some facts about it.

    I found out that:

    1) The federal government moved to Washington in the year 1800. Before that it was in Philadelphia.

    2) In 1791 George Washington had the city designed by a French engineer before it was built.

When I was landlocked on the map, I was in Washington state. That is on the west coast of the United States, and Washington D.C. is in the east. When we go visit the map again, I will find Washington D.C.. It's near the Potomac River and Maryland and Virgina.

    Sincerely,

    Colin

  5. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
The Rocky Mountains are just about 3,000 miles long. The Rocky Mountains were formed almost 55 to 80 million years ago. Some people enjoy hiking, camping, mountaineering, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, skiing, and snowboarding. I like skiing, but I have never done it in the Rocky Mountains.
    Cheers,
    Maya

  6. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
I thought the map was fun. First, I found Los Angeles. I also found some other places I've been like San Diego and Las Vegas. Then, I found the Rocky Mountains. It is the biggest mountain range in North America.
    Sincerely,
    Maya

  7. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

My favorite place on the map was Victoria Island, which is in Canada. The reason it was my favorite place is because I've never seen it before and I like to search for new things. I liked how you gave us questions and we had to find the answers on the map.

A mountain lion is a kind of wild cat. They prey on deer and elk. Some mountain lions are gray but most of them are yellowish tan. They live in Canada and a little bit of United States.

  8. Dear Class,

Did you know that Death Valley is 130 miles deep? In addition, Death Valley is placed in 282 feet beneath sea level. The summer temperature is often around 125F! Can you imagine how hot it is?

    Cheers,
    Michelle

  9. Dear Class,

One thing I learned that I found very interesting is the population of North America. From what I learned, the population of North America is 562 million people. That is less than the population of 3 other continents.

I was curious to find out the population of California so I looked it up online. The population is over 38 million people.

Visiting the map was fun because I got to see other places I have not been to, like Alaska.

    Sincerely,

    Anthony

  10. Dear Class,
When we visited the traveling map of North America, I put a blue cone on the location of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Here a some interesting facts:
The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range expands over 30,000 square miles.

The highest mountain in the United States, Mount Whitney , is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.

    Happy Climbing,
    Blythe

  11. Dear Class,

Did you know the Grand Canyon is one of the biggest canyons in the world? The Grand Canyon is almost one mile deep. One river, called the Colorado River, runs through the Grand Canyon. The lowest part of the canyon has rocks that date back two billion years.

    Cheers,
    Lexi

  12. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

    1) Did you know that there is only one continent that has every single kind of climate? The continent is North America!

    2) Did you also know that the continent with the longest coast line is North America? It is nearly 200,000 miles long!

I think North America is a very interesting place.

    Cheers,

  13. Dear Class,

I enjoyed walking on the Atlantic Ocean. It looked cool, literally. Did you know the only ocean bigger than the Atlantic, is our Pacific Ocean.

In 1912, the largest ship traveling from England to New York sank in the Atlantic. One day I would like to take a voyage on the Atlantic. Unlike most of the Titanic passengers, I would like to live to tell about it.

    Cheers,
    Luc

  14. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

My favorite place on the map was Alaska, which is the largest state of the northern area of the USA. The main reason I like Alaska is that it is home to several animals, like moose, grizzly bears, and caribou.

When we visited the map, I also enjoyed seeing the Grand Canyon. I have never been, but I would like to see the rushing water of the Colorado River and the pink Grand Canyon rattlesnake, which is only found in the Grand Canyon.
    Neat!

    Sincerely,
    Ayden

  15. Dear Mrs Ranney and class,

I learned some great things about North America and I'd like to share them with you. My first fact is that the earliest North Americas were Indians who came from Asia. My second fact is that almost about 562 million people live in North America. Do you have any other great facts to share?

    Sincerely,
    Leann
