Here is a link to a wonderful BrainPop video entitled
Armed Forces. What did you learn about America's Armed Forces?

In class, we will be sending holiday cards to active military personnel. Chance and Nate from Mrs. Yollis' class are in a Cub Scout Troop, and they provided the cards for the "Holiday Cards for the Troops" project.

Are any of your relatives or friends veterans?

Please tell us about them and thank them for their service to America!

  1. Hello Mrs. Ranney and Class,
Hope you are all doing great! I would like to share a bit about my father, Noah's grandpa, Mordechai, as we just observed Veteran's day. Mordechai was a veteran of war. As Mrs. Ranney stated above, Veteran's day is national holiday. Although he didn't serve here in the United States, he did serve in his home country of Israel. Mordechai served in one of Israel's historically largest wars, called the 6 day war. This was a war you may learn about later in life. With that said, on Veteran's day, in addition to being grateful to all the past and current soldiers who served and now serve our country, I am grateful to my father who protected and served his country.
    All my best,
    Nancy (Noah's Ema)

    Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

Both my grandfathers (Annsley's great grandfathers) are veterans. They served in World War II. My father's father was stationed in the Military Police in Charleston, SC. They were in charge of security because it was a big port and they wanted to protect the coast. My mother's father went over seas and fought in a tank during the Battle of the Bulge. A shell hit his tank and he was run over by the tank. He was shot out of the tank, but because it was muddy the tank didn't crush him. He was a very lucky man! He was awarded a Purple Heart, which meant he gave his life to protect us. Today, there are many memorial celebrations that we attend on Veteran's day to honor those who fought for our country.

    Sincerely,
    Rebekah (Annsley's Mom)

  3. Dear Mrs. Ranney's class,
I am Colin's grandpa and I want to say how much I appreciate all the veterans of our armed forces for making America a great place to live where we can be assured of peace and prosperity. Colins's great-grandfather served in WWII in the air force. He was proud to wear the uniform and to serve his country, Hopefully, future generations will not have to fight for the US because peace will have been achieved in the whole world.

  4. @ Nancy and Rebekah -

Those a very cool stories about your relatives who served in the armed forces! Thanks for sharing. Veteran's Day provides a great opportunity for sharing these important stories. I'm thankful for this blog topic so we can all learn a little more about our family histories and pass that knowledge onto our children.

    Sincerely,

    Erin (Colin's mom)

  5. Dear students,

Mrs. Ranney's father and her uncle served in the Army during WWII. We were fortunate that they did not have combat positions. Still, they performed important jobs, and we are proud of them. Our uncle was in a plane crash during training, but survived with a broken arm. Our father was clerk typist and an amateur photographer. While stationed in China, he and some friends were able to build a darkroom and develop their own photographs. We still have many photographs showing scenes of the countryside and rural life there.

Honoring our veterans, and hoping you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

    Janis (Mrs. Ranney's sister)
