Revved Up For Rounding!

In math, our class has been working on ROUNDING!

It can be a tricky skill, so Frogger has a
few tips and rules to help!

Frogger's Radical Rounding Rules!

                  1. Underline the place value position to which you are rounding.
                    2. Draw an arrow to the neighbor on the right.
3. Write which two tens or two hundreds the number is between.
4. If the neighbor next door is 5 or more, round up, round up!
                    5. If it's not, round down!
6. Circle the correct estimate/answer.

Remember, we call numbers round because they end with zero!

Example: Round 74 to the nearest 10

  • 74 is between 70 and 80
  • The digit next door to the tens place is 4, so round down to 70
Answer: 70
(74 gets "rounded down")

Example: Round 86 to the nearest 10

  • 86 is between 80 and 90
  • The digit next door to the tens place is 6, so round up to 90
Answer: 90
(86 gets "rounded up")

  1. Dear Class,
Rounding is fun! I tried the quiz and did pretty good. If you have not given it a shot, I recommend it.

    1. @Lucas,

      Thanks for your challenging problems!

The answer to the first on is 80,000.

In the second problem, the two tens that 673 is between are 670 and 680. We know we're going to round down, so the answer to the second one is 670!

In the last problem,8,937 is between 8,930 and 8,940, and we will round up,so the answer is....
      8,940!

      Are we correct?
Lucas, here's one for you to solve:

What is 375,982 rounded to the nearest hundred thousand and also to the nearest ten thousand?!

  3. Dear class,

I have a problem for you. What is the answer to 10,999,999 rounded to the nearest ten million? I have another problem for you, what is the answer to 99,999,999 rounded to the nearest ten? I wonder who can get both problems right!

  4. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

I am so thrilled with the way that you are learning rounding. What a great way to write down both rounding choices and then circle the correct answer. I am learning a lot by watching Kim do her homework. Way to go Mrs. Ranney and team. Good luck on your tests tomorrow.

    Best,

    Kim's Mom

  5. Dear Mrs.Ranney and Class,

    You are correct.

I know I'm going to round up because of the seven in the ten thousand place. The answer to the question is 400,000.

I'm going to round up because of the five in the thousands place and the answer to the other question is 380,000.

It was not sheer luck that I answered the questions.

I love math even though questions are like boulders sometimes, because sometimes they are hard to answer just like boulders are hard to move.

I want this to be a HUGE post.

    Cheers,
    Luc✠s

I hope everyone gets a good grade on their math test! If you ever go on a camping trip be careful of ledges See you tomorrow!!!
