Fabulous Fall, 2013

Did you know that this year, September 22, is the first day of autumn, also known as
the autumnal equinox?

In Southern California, we do not experience autumn, or fall,
the same way some places do.

However, we do feel a change in our weather, and even
the leaves of our trees sometimes change c
olor!

Have you ever wondered why leaves change color in the fall?

  1. Hello Mrs. Ranney and class,

Fabulous Fall has come with your autumnal equinox whereas down here in Australia we have had our spring equinox. Australia is one of the few countries that accepts the beginning of the month as the change of seasons but only with our spring equinox does spring really begin.

Here in Australia, our winter sports are drawing to an end with different football grand final games being played. There is soccer, Australian Rules Football, rugby league and rugby union. Cricket is now coming into season for the summer.

What do I like about fall? Most native trees in Australia are evergreen and don't shed their leaves but gardens often have trees which do. In my backyard, we have a Japanese maple. I love its changing colours as winter approaches but, of course, it also means leaves to rake. :)

  2. Autumn Greetings Room 9,

Fall has always been my favorite season of the year. I grew up in Northridge, CA and the street where I lived had lots of beautiful trees which (believe it or not) did have leaves that changed color with the seasons. Of course, when the Santa Ana winds blew all the leaves would "fall" and my dad would clean up the yard with me and my sisters raking the leaves into piles and then leaping into the huge stacks of leaves!

My parents still live in the same house so Blythe and her sisters can jump in all the leaves and experience one of my favorite Fall activities!

I also love the cool, crisp weather fall brings as well as biting into a cool, crisp apple or pear.

    Cheers,
    Karen, Blythe's mom

  3. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

My Mom and I looked it up and this is what we found. When fall starts the trees start getting ready for winter and then the leaves stop making food and the chlorophyll stops. The leaves lose their green because the trees grow cells over the water tubes in the leaves as the trees are resting and saving their energy for the winter and in order to do this the leaves shut down.

My favorite fall sport is soccer. I prefer fall soccer because the season is longer than spring soccer and I get to play more games. I played my first season game this weekend that was not a friendly match. We won the game and I scored the first goal.

I love fall because my sister Lily and I have our birthdays in the fall.

    Cheers,
    Lucas and Sybil, Lucas' Mom

  4. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I looked up why leaves change color and learned that when they die, they loose their chlorophyll and change from green.  Then I was curious why leaves are sometimes purple.  We looked it up and found that purple leaves have a  high concentration of molecules called anthocyanians.  This makes them look less green and more purple.

My favorite fall sport is soccer.  My coach calls it futbol because he is from Europe.  In fact, most places except for the US call soccer futbol.

Does anyone know why we call football soccer in America?

    See you soon,
    Annsley

  5. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

    Fall is my favorite season!
I love the sports in the fall because there's soccer and baseball, which is one of my top favorite sports.

My dad jumped in leaves when he lived in Chicago, Illinois. He loved to do that . Have you ever jumped in leaves?

I go swimming in the fall sometimes, but mostly in summer. I like to dive a lot. Do you like to swim?

    Your student,
    Jacob

    1. Dear Jacob and Class,
I spend a lot of time in the pool. I am a huge fan of swimming. My favorite stroke backstroke, it make me smile. The last time I swam was yesterday, in the ocean!

  6. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I learned that leaves are all different in their own way. They help us identify the kind of plant.

My favorite activity in the Fall is jumping around in big piles of leaves. What I like about Fall is how beautiful the leaves look. The leaves look orange, red, and yellow.

The leaves of the trees in my neighborhood do change colors and it looks so beautiful!

    Sincerely,
    Anthony
