Ring in 2011!

A great way to start off a new year is to set goals for yourself.

Think about what you'd like to accomplish during 2011.

Choose a school goal and a personal goal.

Some school goal examples are:  to build a better vocabulary, to master all the multiplication and division facts, or to read over 3 Reading Counts books every month.

Some personal goal examples are to improve in a sport or on a musical instrument, to be more helpful at home,
or to start a new hobby.

Write about these goals in your comment.

Be sure to include the steps you will take
to help you accomplish your goals!

  1. Dear Class,
I am very excited about this new year!

A school goal that I hope to achieve is to improve my technology skills. One step I will take is learning to use imovie. I will explore the program and create movies with you that we can use on our blog. Another step I will take is to explore other class blogs in order to learn more about techniques I can use on our class blog.

In addition, I have a personal goal. I hope to climb Half Dome in Yosemite National Park sometime during 2011. To prepare for this accomplishment, I will hike two to three times a week in hilly areas. Another step that will help me reach my goal will be to improve my upper body strength. The hike up Half Dome includes a portion where I will have to pull myself up along cables. To strengthen my muscles, I will lift weights at least two times a week and take yoga once a week.

Obviously, I will need to be determined and hard - working to meet my goals for 2011!

  2. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

    I am thrilled about 2011!

One of my personal goals for the new year is to try to join a swim team. My first step is to continue with my enjoyable, but exhausting, swim lessons. I take swim lessons every Sunday, and each lesson I master new swimming techniques. The next step would be to practice in my own swimming pool. It will be a little challenging because I have to force myself to gain discipline.

Additionally, I have an academic goal to achieve. My academic goal is to improve the speed of my typing. The first step is to continue learning keys on Alphasmarts at school. I just started the keys P and R. Sometimes I have to try a few times before I succeed on my speed builders. Another step is to also practice typing on Dance Mat Typing at home.

Both my goals require strong discipline, but I’m committed to achieve both of them.

    Happy New Year,
    Ella

  3. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

This is Carly and Jamie. We are also very ecstatic about this new year!

    Our school goal is:

We want to be better bloggers! Both of us want to use higher level vocabulary. We also want to write more comments. To do that we will use the higher level words that we learn in class, write longer comments, and get on the computer more.

    Carly's personal goal is:

To be better in soccer. I am in club, and I want to improve. Some of the techniques that I will use are going to all of my practices and learning all of the skills that my coach teaches me. I will always wear my gear, and will go to all of my games and face the challenges. I will try to achieve my goal of getting better in soccer and use all of the tricks that I learn.

    Jamie's personal goal is:

To become a better photographer. To do this I will practice taking photos of simple things like flowers, plants, and people. Once I have accomplished that I will try harder things like moving objects and videos. Another step is learning to hold the camera steady. I will also try and take pictures more often.

Clearly, we will need hard work, determination, and focus.

We hope everybody achieves their New Years resolution.

    Happy New Year!

    Warm Regards,
    Carly and Jamie:)

My personal resolution is to get better at drawing. I would like to be a famous artist one day, so this is very important too me. Step one, I will practice on my easel every single day. Step two, I will try to find more art classes to take.

  5. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

My school goal is to get on the blog more. I plan to write more and more comments. I also plan write better comments. I have been getting family members to get on.
Some of my family members go on without asking! That is my school goal.

I have two personal New Year's resolutions. One is to play on the Calabasas Raiders. I am very good at QB (quarterback), but I want to play safety (defense. To prepare for this accomplishment, I will need to play and practice a lot. Another goal is to learn how to do a cartwheel. I will need to practice a lot. These are my
    personal goals.

@Mrs. Ranney my mom has climbed Half Dome.

  6. Dear Mrs.Ranney,
    Happy New Year!
One of my personal goals is to get better at playing the flute. I have been taking flute for 5 months. So far, I have really enjoyed playing songs. First, I will keep practicing, so I can get better. Next, I will try harder to learn more difficult songs. Last, I will do my best, even when it gets tough. Recently, I have gotten some bad news. The bad news was that my teacher will be moving to Indiana. I am getting a new teacher next week. I was really sad when I found out, but I am still going to keep playing.

A school goal of mine is to get faster at multiplication. My mom made copies of the multiplication tests, so I can practice at home. I will also play games on our blog to help me get faster at the facts. I always try my best to beat my time from the last test.
    Best Wishes,
    Mikayla

  7. Dear Mrs.Ranney and the class,
Here is what I want to improve for the new year. I want to be a better basketball player. The first thing to improve is a better job on throwing the ball in the basket, and making it.Secondly, is to work harder on stealing the ball. In addition, I want to get better on defense.Lastly, I need to pass the ball more for the other players to play too. These are all the things I want to do to get better at basketball. I hope you will have an amazing year in 2011. I also hope you have fun on your bike hike.

Class, what are you going to write about? Are you going to do the same thing that I am doing, or something else? I hope you all pick something that you enjoy.I hope you have a fun time in 2011.

  8. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I’m glad to start a fantastic new year!

One of my personal goals for this year is to become a better gymnast.
To accomplish this I need to practice more at home. I need to improve on backbend kick over.
To do this I will require balance, strength, and flexibility.
My other personal goal is to start helping my mom in the kitchen. I love to see her cook. The first step to this is making easy meals always with an adult supervision.

A school goal is to do better on Alphasmarts by going slower and concentrating more. Another way of practicing my typing skills is to blog more often.

With desire and perseverance, I can accomplish my goals

    Sincerely,
    Emily

  9. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

My school goal is to become a better writer. I will work on it by using a dictionary and thesaurus, like I did for my writing spiral today. Additionally, I want to utilize more high level vocabulary.

My personal goal is to improve my speed. I will work on my speed by going up to AC Stelle with my Dad and practicing to run. Furthermore, my increased speed will enable me to dart and block more goals.

  10. Dear Mrs.Ranney,
I hope everyone had a Happy New Year!

One of my school goals is to read more books and
more pages. I will read for a little each day after
school, and when I am done with work at school
I will spend that time reading. Then I will get a bookmark done. I hope that will do the trick. I want to spend as much time on reading as I can.

One of my personal goals is to be an all-star in soccer.
I play soccer and I think it is so much fun. I am going to work hard by practicing in my backyard every day. I will also practice by trying to score some goals at all of my
soccer games, then maybe I will be so hard working I can get on the all-star team and have fun. I will have to be hard at work.

    Your Student,
    Grace

  11. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I feel like 2011 is already starting off magnificently!!

    My School Goal Is:

To read 5 or more books for reading counts each month. To achieve this goal, I will read every day at school and at home plus read higher level books.

    My Personal Goal Is:

I want to get better at soccer so that I can be on the All Star Team again. Grace and I are on the same soccer team and we were both nominated to play in the All Star Game at the end of last season. To succeed, I will practice hard and use the techniques my coach teaches me. In all, the most important thing is to never give up. If you give up, you will never learn what you wanted to learn and then it's not any fun.

It will be hard but I am determined to achieve all my goals.

    Sincerely,
    Leah :)

  24. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

Hello, this is Jamie and Carly. We have started to succeed in our two goals.

    Jamie has improved in:

Blogging and photography. I have improved in photography by taking pictures of simple things and taking more pictures. I have also taken the next step by starting to take videos and moving objects. I have improved blogging by doing more comments and making the comments longer and better. I have done many of my comments with my best friend, Carly. We are a great team and can write long and phenomenal comments.

    Carly has improved in:

Blogging and soccer. I have become a better soccer player. I just had a club soccer scrimmage, and I played in the freezing cold. I think that I have also started really using some great tricks. I think that it is true if you use the tricks in the game then you will have a better chance of fooling your opponent. I think that I have also improved in blogging a little bit. For example, I have used higher level words in my comments. I have also done longer comments, and most of them with Jamie, and I have used some HTML codes.

    Happy New Year!

    Regards,
    Jamie and Carly:)

  25. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I have had so much fun working on my resolution! I have put lots of effort into my goal.

    I have some questions:

Has anybody else started working on their goal?

If you have, then what steps did you take so far?

Are you having a fun time working on your resolution?

I think that it is really fun learning what every body's goals are! I hope that you are getting better and better at your goal!

    Happy New Year!

    Regards,
    Carly:)

  27. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I am very excited about the new year and how much I've improved in one of my goals!

First, I have been working on my personal goal, which was to become a better photographer. I had already achieved the first step to my personal goal a couple of weeks ago. Over winter break, my family and I went to Palm Springs and there are lots of flowers and plants to take pictures of, so I took pictures of most of those things. I have recently accomplished taking videos. At first it was really hard and I wanted to give up because I couldn't follow the people in the video, but I was determined and kept trying until I finally got it.

Good luck improving on your new year's resolutions!

    Warmly,
    Jamie :)
