Using the Encyclopedia

The PFC (Parent/Faculty Club) generously purchased a one year subscription to World Book Online!

The students in Mrs. Ranney's class are learning how to research!

  • Step 1 :  Think about a topic you'd like to learn about!

  • Step 2: Log-in to the online site using your username and password.  (Remember you can get to the World Book by going to Learning Links on the Chaparral website.  Your parents have your username and password.)

  • Step 3: Type the topic of interest in the search box and press return.

  • Step 4: Read and learn! Remember,  subheadings can help guide a researcher to the answer.
Share the facts you learned with others!

Today we discovered:

1. North America has a population of 538,000,000 people. (How does that compare with the other continents?  Hmmm.....)

2.  North America is the third largest continent. Asia is the largest, and Africa is larger than North America. (Hmmm...I wonder how big North America is in square miles?)

3. The world's largest island is Greenland, and the largest freshwater lake is Lake Superior.

3. Coast redwoods are the tallest living trees. (I wonder exactly how tall? Hmmm....)

Have you learned anything new from an encyclopedia?

  1. Mrs. Ranney:

Growing up I Ioved using the Encyclopedia (book) and now we all "google" information that we need. So this is very exciting that the kids are now able to use the World Book Online Encyclopedia to do research.

I really enjoyed exploring with Marisa.

    Have fun kids!

  2. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

We just looked up information on World Book, and found out that there are 538 million people in North America. North America has the largest island, Greenland. Another fact is that we have the most famous water fall, the Niagara falls. The largest fresh water lake is Lake Superior. We had the most magnificent time in class.

We are having the most fun ever making the map.

    Regards,

    Ethan and Cameron

His team won 335 games and lost 22 from 1964-1975. He coached four former NBA players: Kareem Abdul - Jabbar, Gail Goodrich, Bill Walton, and Sidney Wicks.

John Wooden's birthday is Oct.14, and he was born in Martinsville, Indiana. He went to Purdue University. He played basketball thereand won all-American Honors from 1930-1932. He was a Hall of Famer as a coach and player. He also wrote a memoir titled "My Personal Best", which was about his personal life and coaching career.

He was the Rookie of the Year 1984-85. He was MVP for 5 seasons. When he retired it was the 1993-94 season. He played for the Bulls and won 6 championships. 7. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I used to watch Michael Jordan play for the Chicago Bulls. I would watch with my dad. Michael would fly through the air like no one else could. When I watched him play I was captivated! I wish Carson could have seen him play in his prime because of his love for the game. I hope to find a game with Michael Jordan on ESPN Classics, so that Carson can see him with his own eyes.

    Best,
    Mrs. Binder

  9. Dear Class, and Mrs.Ranney,
The Liberty Bell was brought from England to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1753. The bell rang on July 8,1776, to announce the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. In 1841 the Liberty Bell cracked.

I looked up the topic of Ice Cream
in the United States. I learned that the most popular flavors are vanilla, chocolate, and Neapolitan.
After, I learned that 900 million gallons are made each year. The people in the U.S. eat more ice cream than any other country. They eat about 15 quarts a year.

    Your Student,

    Brandon

I looked up facts that are interesting like Antarctica is so cold that a lot of people can't survive there.
Another thing is Australia is a continent and a state. One other thing is Hawaii is made out of lava.
I'm excited that our class is doing a project about
    different things.

  14. Dear Mrs.Ranney,

I learned tons of fascinating facts about Brett Farve. Brett was born on October 10th, 1969. He spent 3 years at Southern Mississippi. He was drafted to the Atlanta Falcons in 1991. In the 1992 season he was traded to the Green Bay Packers. He was traded again to the New York Jets in 2008. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2009-10.

He made a record in most completions, 5,720, yards passing, 65,127, touchdown passes, 464, and games started by a quarterback 269.
The 269 came from the 2008 season. He was the first player in NFL history to pass 3,000 in 10 consecutive seasons. In 2005, he became the 3rd quarterback that had 50,000 total career yards. The other 2 were Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins and John Elway of the Denver Broncos. He was the MVP 3 years in a row. The Packers won in the Super Bowl 37. In 2006,
Favre joined Marino as one of the two quarterbacks that threw 400 touchdown passes. In 2007, he won 149th game as a quarterback breaking John Elway's with 148.

  15. Dear Marisa,
I'm glad to see that you've been using the online World Book. Australia is definitely one of the seven continents. However, I believe that it is also a country, not a state.
    Keep on researching!
    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Ranney

  16. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
I have been doing research on owls. First, male snow owls don't have spots but the female does. Next, scientists have found over 200 owls in the world. The smallest owl is the Elf owl which is only six inches tall. Owls symbolize wisdom and are very beautiful birds.

    Sincerely,
    Natalie

  17. Dear Natalie,
What a great job you did researching about owls. I love birds, and I find owls extremely interesting. Did you know that there are able to fly without making a sound, so that their prey cannot hear them coming?
    Keep up the good work.
    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Ranney

  18. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
I have been doing research on penguins. The first thing I have learned about penguins is that they are covered by thick feathers that form a waterproof coat. Their feathers are black or gray, except their stomach is mostly white. Penguins eat fish, squid, and shrimp. Some penguins kept in zoos have lived for more than 30 years. But in the wild, most penguins live up to 20 years.

    Sincerely,
    Leanne

  19. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
I researched Ladainian Tomlinson (LT) a football player. He is on the San Diego Chargers. Tomlinson is one of the best players in the NFL. In 2006 LT had one of the best seasons ever, and in the NFL history. He set the NFL records most touchdown(31), most rushing touchdowns(28), and the most points scored with(186). He was named the MVP in the NFL in 2006. In 2003 he became the first player in NFL history to run 1,000 touchdowns and catch 100 passes! He did that in just 18 games. Ladainian also led the NFL in rushing in the 2007 season which was for 1,474. Tomlinson was born on June 23, 1979, in Rosebud, Texas. He played for Christan Univesty from 1997 through 2000. LT led the NCAA in rushing in 1999 to 2000. In, 1999 Tomlinson set a record for rushing in one game with 406 yards. San Deigo drafted him in the 2001 as the fith person picked. I learned about LT on WorldBookWeb. I had a blast learning about Ladainain Tomlinson.

    Best,

    Andy

  20. Dear Andy,
You did a great job researching about Ladainian Tomlinson. I knew that he attended Texas Christian University. In fact, when my daughter, Sarah, was going to school there, I was able to see him play! It was in 2000, the same year he was nominated for the Heisman Trophy.
Keep up the great research work.
    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Ranney

  23. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I went on World Book and looked up bubblegum. I learned that bubblegum is mostly made from gum base. Gum base makes the bubblegum stretchy. Two other ingredients are sugar and corn syrup. Corn syrup makes the bubblegum have some flavor. I think that gum is fun to chew and blow bubbles.
    Best,
    Sara
