Learn to Write a Compound Sentence!

Mrs. Ranney's students are always trying to improve their writing skills.

*     *     *     *     *
 A compound sentence:
  1. Combines two shorter sentences (so has TWO subjects)
  2. Joins the two sentences with  a conjunction (and, or, but, so)
*     *     *     *     *
Here are some sample compound sentences, and they are all about Thanksgiving!
(Hey, that's a compound sentence!)

***

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, and many families gather for a traditional feast.

In 1620, the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, but they had really
planned a trip to Virginia.

The Massachusetts winter was extremely cold and harsh, so everyone
had to work together to survive!

The Wampanoag Indians helped the struggling Pilgrims, so they were able to harvest crops for their first feast!

Modern Americans dine on turkey and stuffing at home, or they make a
reservation at a local restaurant.

  1. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

My family and I are going to my grandma's house for Thanksgiving. My grandma cooks most of the food, and she orders the rest from a restaurant. We make cookies at her house, and my brother and I decorate them. After dinner we eat the cookies.

    Best wishes,
    Maya

  3. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

My family and I are having two Thanksgiving dinners next week. The first one is at my aunt's house, and the second one is at a friend's house. The good thing is that we get a whole week off from school, and the bad thing is that I can't watch T.V. during dinner. I also wish I liked turkey better!

    Yours truly,
    Nate

  6. Dear Class,

Every Thanksgiving since I was a little girl, my family and I went up to my grandparents' house, so now it has become a family tradition. I see my family members, and I eat turkey or ham. I think I am going to like Thanksgiving break this year because I am going to Mammoth and then Lake Tahoe. Finally, I will go to San Jose for the family gathering.

Yes we are celebrating my cousin's birthday this year, and it will be a recycling party. Somehow she learned about recycling, and she's only two years old.

There will be a trash truck guy.

The day after Thanksgiving my brother, my dad, and some family friends play football at Calabasas High school. We are hoping that it will not be raining, so we will not get wet playing football. My mom has been doing the turkey bowl since she was in high school with her friends in Calabasas, so we are continuing a tradition.

    Sincerely,

  19. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

This Thanksgiving I am going to Florida, and most of my family is going to be there. Last year I went to San Diego, and I went ice skating on the beach! Thanksgiving is one of favorite holidays because we get to thank the Pilgrims for what they did for our country. I love to spend the holidays with my family and friends.

  28. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

I love hearing about your exquisite Thanksgiving breaks. I love going on break because I get to spend time with my family, but I always miss my friends and teacher, of course. I think writing compound sentences are fun, so I have a fantastic time on the blog. In my opinion, blogging is a great oppotunity to sharpen my writing skills.

    Happy Thanksgiving,

  29. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I am going skiing, and I am going to Las Vegas. I am staying at Mandalley Bay, and I am going skiing at Mammoth.

I like skiing on the blue, and I like to ski on green. I am too scared to go on black, and it is too steep! I am scared I am going to fall, and my brother had twisted hid ankle on black diamond. That is why I am scared.

In Las Vegas I am going to circus, circus, and If you want to know what circus, circus is, it is a amusement park with roller coasters, and it is also a hotel.

After all that fun, we go home for Thanksgiving dinner. Our uncle, ant, grandpa, grandma, and friends are coming to our big feast. My mother and my grandma is cooking the feast.

We are going to have a lot of things:

    turkey
    mashed potatoes
    cranberry sauce
    pumpkin pie
    apple pie
    stuffing
    salad
    gravy
    cucumber
    carrots

We also have a Russian dish called plof.

What do you do for Thanksgiving?

    Sincerely,

    Mia♥ from Mrs. Yollis' class

  30. Dear Mrs Ranney,

I am so thrilled to be over here to celebrate Thanksgiving with all the family, and it gives us all lots of holiday time to be together.

I am looking forward to watching the boys play baseball, and meeting all of their friends.

I hear all about the things that they do in my telephone calls from England, but it is so much better to actually see everything in real life.

    Best regards,

    Oliver's grandma

  31. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

This year my family will go to a restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner, so that we can spend more time together instead of cooking and cleaning. My father and grandparents will be having turkey, but my mother, brothers and myself are vegetarians, so we will gladly eat up all the vegetables and deserts.

    Happy Thanksgiving,
    Elijah

  32. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

Here is an example compound sentence: Dylan and Josh are doing lots of things, but the good thing is that they're agreeing. This is an example of a compound sentence in our house: Dylan was on an Arthur show, so he got to be on T.V. Josh got to be on youtube due to a huge collision at home plate on a great catch to save the game.

    Sincerely,
    Dylan & Josh
P.S. Dylan made a great throw
