Wonderful Winter Solstice!

In the Northern Hemisphere, winter is the coldest season of the year.
It begins about December 21 and lasts until about March 21. Around December 21 or 22,
the sun's rays fall directly over the farthest point south of the equator - marking the first day of winter.

Winter days have fewer hours of daylight because of the path the earth takes as it revolves around the sun. The earth completely revolves around the sun during 365 days. The earth's axis always tips about 23 1/2 degrees from a line perpendicular to its path.

In the Southern Hemisphere, winter begins in June.
Different regions have longer winters than others. For example, in the polar regions, winter takes up half the year. In the Temperate Zones winter takes up about one quarter of the year.

In regions where there is cold weather, it causes many changes in the environment. Water may freeze and become ice, snow, sleet or icicles. Most plants and animals become dormant and rest.
Some animals hibernate. The only plants that grow and remain green are evergreens.
People protect themselves from the cold climate with winter clothing when they go outdoors. They enjoy a variety of indoor activities or outdoor winter sports such as skiing, skating, or sledding.

  1. Dear Mrs.Ranney,
I Loved the slide show so much! My favorite part of the slide show was the pictures of people at the cookie station. I also loved many other things about the slide show but I cannot name all of them. One of the things that I liked was eating the delicious cookies. I am not happy that it has been raining though. I hope that the rain will stop before we get back in school. If it rains when we are in school then we will have to have reccess and lunch inside. I have a of question for you.

Are you going somewhere special for winter break?

    Happy Holidays!

    Warmest Regards,
    Carly

  9. Dear Mrs.Ranney,
My favorite holiday in December is definitely Hanukkah. I like Hanukkah, because I get to light the menorah ever night. I think that Hanukkah is very special to me because I get to spend so much time with my family and friends.

  12. Dear Mrs. Ranney and class,

I went to San Francisco. It did not snow when I was there, but it rained one day and was very cold. The temperature was in the high 40's and low 50's.

I went on a tour at AT&T Giants stadium. I also saw Candlestick Park and the 49ers stadium.

We also went to Chinatown and had dinner at the House of Nan King.

My grampy drove over the Golden Gate bridge and we went to the Muir redwood forest.

Additionally, we went to the Fisherman's Wharf and ate ice cream sundaes at Ghiradelli Square.

    I had a stupendous time.

    Happy New Year everyone.

    All the best,
    Aidan

  14. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I just got back from Israel! I saw many amazing and wonderful sights there.

One of the sights I saw there is The old city of Jerusalem. In the old city, I went to the Wailing Wall.

At the Wailing Wall, I wrote a prayer on a note and put the note in a crack because I believe God will read my prayer inside the crack.

I also saw my great grandmother who is 93 years old!

On my last day in Israel, many of my relatives came to eat dinner with us.

The thing I enjoy most about Winter is the holidays and Winter break.

    Your student,
    Ella

I think that it is stupendous that you have been to Palm Springs before! I just got back from the cruise that I just went on. The name of the ship is, Royal Caribbean Mariner Of The Seas. That was the first cruise I have ever been on. It is also my mom's first cruise. I went on the cruise with my cousins, named Ben, Nate, and Max. I also went with their parents. Their names are Faith, and Jeff. Some of the other people I went with were, my Grandma, and Pop Pop. I also went with my mom, named Andrea, my dad, named Gavin, and my two sisters named Allison, and Madison. On our first stop in Cabo San Lucas, I just walked around. Our second stop in Mexico was Mazatlan, where I went para-sailing and got my hair braided. Our last stop was in Porta Viarta where I went zip lining, and there were eleven different zip lines. Then on the last full day of my whole cruise I was playing a game in the arcade and I beat the game, so I won a camera. The game I played was called Stacker.

    I have some questions:

What else did you do in Palm Springs besides watching ducks and swimming?

Did you have fun in Palm Springs?

    Happy New Year!

    Your Friend,
    Carly

  16. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

The slideshow was sensational!! I liked it when all the teams were holding their snow globes.

This winter break I did not travel and no one visited us from out of town. Even though no one visited, we still had an awesome time! We went to the movies, bowling, roller-skating and ice-skating. When I was ice-skating, I saw my first grade teacher, Mrs. Cirino! She says hi to everyone.

All in all, I had a fantastic winter break.

    Sincerely,
    Leah :)

In Palm Springs I also went to a mini golf place called Boomers with my sister Carly, and my mom. There are Go Karts so we went on those. We had a phenomenal time!

We also picked lots of fruit and ran down hills. My sisters and I raced down the hills many times.

    I have a question:

Where are all of your family members from?

    Warmest Regards,
    Jamie

  18. Dear Mrs.Ranney,
I cannot believe that it just almost snowed! My sister said that it has been 40 years since it last snowed in Calabasas. I wish that I could go in snow so I could throw snowballs, and get better at aiming my throws for softball. I wonder if it will snow again.

    Happy New Year!

    Warmly,
    Carly:)

    Our party was great!
The cookies were delicious. I also did some fun things during winter break. I had my birthday with my very best friend who lives far away. Anyway I had a great time.

Happy New Year to all of you!

  20. @Carly,
I believe that it snowed here in Calabasas around 1987. I will have to check my old yearbooks. There are actually pictures of the Chaparral kids coming to school in the snow!
It has been so cold that I thought it might happen again! Wouldn't that be fun?
    New Year's Best Wishes,
    Mrs. Ranney

  21. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
This is Carly and Jamie. We think that it is so outstanding that you have pictures of kids in the snow.

    We have some questions:

Could you possibly bring in the scrapbook, so we can look at some of the pictures of the kids in the snow?

Did the kids get to have recess and lunch outside, so they could play in the snow?

I hope that it snows, so we could see what it is like to be in the snow at school.

    Happy New Year!

    Yours Truly,
    Carly and Jamie:)

  24. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

Hello, this is Carly and Jamie.
We both really enjoyed learning about what everybody did over winter break. Both of us thought that what everybody did was different but yet all special in different ways.

We had a conversation about what we did over winter break, and now Carly knows exactly what Jamie did, and Jamie knows what Carly did over winter break.

    Happy New Year!

    Your Friends,
    Carly and Jamie:)

I have really enjoyed winter. I had so much fun over winter break! I was surprised to see how many things people did over winter break.

    I have a question:

Did anybody visit family members that live in the snow?

  26. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

I can’t believe that we are already almost halfway through 2011! I remember when all of us were waiting for 2011 to arrive over winter break!

Over winter break, I went on a cruise and we spent the New Year on our cruise!

When it was New Year’s Day this is what happened:

On the 5th deck in the promenade, there were so many balloons in nets, and when it was 12:00 they dropped all of the balloons to celebrate the New Year!

It was so hard to get down from the 9th deck to the 5th deck in time for the balloons to fall down, so when I got down I tried to get to the middle of the crowd, but my cousins were at the end of the crowd and they didn’t let me push through.

That is my favorite trip that I have every taken in my entire life!

    Warmly,
    Carly
