  1. Dear Mrs. Ranney,
My favorite book is from the fantasy genre. It's called The Tale of Despereaux.
My favorite genre is non-fiction because I like to learn about history and sports players from the past.
I like learning about famous artists from the past, and that's non-fiction too!
I like to read the series Katie Kazoo Switcheroo!
I like a book series from the mystery genre called Nancy Drew.
I enjoy the series Magic Treehouse from the fantasy genre, but they take place in real places.
    Sincerely,
    Jamie, Aidan,Ella, Leah,Ariel, and Justin

  5. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

My favorite genre is fantasy. The reasons I like fantasy is that more things can happen than in the real world because it is made up. One of my favorite books is the Tale of Despereaux. I can't wait to find out what my classmate's favorite genres are.

  9. Dear Mrs. Ranney's class,

I had Mrs. Ranney last year also, with the same Reading Counts
process that you all have. Mrs. Ranney probably has told you all this before, that an A is 3 books, a B is two books, a C is 1 book, and 0 books is no credit for the month. After the 1st month of the process, every following month you will have to write a booktag, which is a little summary of the story you have read. For example, if you pass 3 tests (you need to get 7/10 or better to pass) with 2 booktags you get a B. At the end of the month, Mrs.Ranney gives out awards for most books read in each month and most words read.

That's mostly everything I can remember since I'm in 4th grade now, from a very exciting and long summer.

    Sincerely,
    Carson (From Mrs. Kaplan's class)
P.S. Have an amazing year with Mrs. Ranney!

  12. Mrs. Ranney,
My name is Mrs.Webb-Scheers and I teach Grade 4. We have created our first ever class blog this year and it is called "The Classroom Connection". We found your blog from one of the blogs that we follow with our class (Mrs. Yollis' Blog). We wanted to let you know that we think your blog is pretty cool. We really liked how you find Reading Counts books. In our classroom, we follow a program called "The Daily 5" and so we choose books alittle differently than you do at your school. Here is how we do it: First, we think of the phrase "I PICK" when we are selecting a book for independent reading. We think about or answer the questions that each letter stands for and if at the end, we are able to answer them all...we have ourselves a Just-Right Reading book. The I stands for "I choose a book", the P stands for "What is my purpose for reading?", the I stands for "Does the book interest me?", the C stands for "Do I comprehend what I am reading?" and lastly the K stands for "Do I know most of the words?". For the K, we use your exact same strategy of counting the words on the page as you do. We just thought we would share how we select books with your class. Feel free to check out our blog(http://kwebb.edublogs.org)

  13. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I love to read! No matter where I am I always bring a book. My two favorite genres are fiction and non fiction. I like fiction because the adventure can take you anywhere real place or not. I enjoy non fiction because I like learning about history through books. One of my favorite series is Harry Potter. It is genre is fantasy.

    All the best,
    Jamie

Right now I am reading The Blossoms Meet the Vulture Lady. I have read all of the other books in the series and they are fantastic books.

    @Carly

I am like you and I love to read so much it feels like I'm in the book.

    I have some questions:

What book are you reading right now?

    What is your favorite book?

    What is your favorite series?

I think that it is astounding that you are currently reading the book Travel Team. I wonder if I will try to read a book that is not a reading counts book, but first I have to read three reading counts books first.

    I have a question:

Is the book Travel Team good?

    Happy New Year!

    Warm Regards,
    Carly:)

I am not sure what my favorite book is, or my favorite series. The book that I just finished yesterday is called Tales Of A Fourth Grade Nothing. I think that it is a marvelous book.

    I have some questions:

Have you ever read that book?

    What is your favorite book?

    What is your favorite series?

Do you like the book The Blossoms And The Vulture Lady?

    Happy New Year!

  21. Dear Mrs. Ranney,

I can’t believe how many words everybody read in all for reading counts! January was a month full of busy readers in our class. One thing that I didn’t know was that the average is 43,000 for a student. I am so surprised that so many students read over that amount of words! Another thing that surprised me was, to see how many words the whole class read in all. It was also very impressive.

    I have a question:

Did it take a long time to check all of the book tags?

    Yours,
    Carly:)

  22. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Class,

I can’t believe that reading counts will be over on Monday. It seems like we just started reading counts. Also, I am so excited to find out how many words I have read in the whole entire school year, and I also can’t wait to learn who the person that read the most words is.

There are some people in our class that have been reading like crazy! Our top readers are also amazing bloggers.

    Warm Regards,
    Carly
